There are many ways of getting attention. A naked man running down a busy street is one sure way of getting a lot of attention. But are you getting the right attention.
If you try to get people to read your ad through some clever trick with creative words or catchy phrase, that is about all you will get. A person is exposed to a few thousands advertisement every day. More so than ever with Internet and mobile phones that allow access to TV programs from anywhere. Just take a look at the subway and anyone who has a mobile device on hand. All of them are fixed on the small little screen catching their favorite drama or MTV. To attract the right kind of attention, you must know what is already going on in your readers’ mind. Have you been to the Lee Kong Chian's Reference Library at the Central Library, Singapore? Did you know that the library has a policy that bags larger than A4 size are not allowed in the Reference Library? They even have a sample of the size for you to measure your bag. Hmmm... time to carry a clutch bag to library.. Do you have a policy that makes no sense to your customers? The headline is the text at the top of a newspaper article, brochure, flyers and mailers.
What is the job of your headline? If you look at how you read the newspapers, you realize that as you flip through the pages, you scan the headlines and then zoom in on what grab your interest. This is the way all of us behave. And we all act the same way when it comes to reading advertisement, letters, mailers, etc. So how are you going to capture your readers’ interest? Or perhaps you should ask "What a 28mm Wide Angle lens can do?"
How many of you can tell the difference between a 28mm Wide Angle lens and a 32mm Wide Angle lens? If you as a marketer do not know, what about your customer? Think about it. What your staff say to your customers and how they say it has an impact on customers' experience with your business.
The next time you are at a shop, restaurant or hotel, take note of how staff respond to you. You'll be surprised how many of them answer you back with "Yes." Or is it "Yes???" Does it make you feel like you are intruding into their lives? Yes? Would "Yes, How may I help?" or "Yes, How can I help you?" be better? Try them out. Any idea what is the world's oldest profession?
For the sake of those who are unaware, it's prostitution. While this profession has a bad reputation, there are lessons we can learn that are relevant to your business. After all, there's a reason why it's the oldest profession while many other professions do not last. 1) Need, Want and Desire There's a need, a want and a desire. Do your business serve a need, but not a want and a desire? Or do your business serve a want, but not a need and a desire? 2) Getting Attention These people are better at getting the attention of their potential customers than any schooled and experienced marketers in big corporations. 3) Paying Attention These people will treat their customers as the most important person in the world by giving them their full attention. P.S. I live near Geylang, the famous red-light district in Singapore. Passing through this area every day does open my eyes to learning something. Beware of how color affects your customers.
Don't use dark words on dark backgrounds. It's worse if your words are small. Don't use light colors words on white background. It's worse if you create fading effects. When customers cannot see, they will just walk away. It's worse if you are targeting potential customers 40 year old and above. And this applies to your website, brochures, flyers and whatever media you use to communicate with your customers. |
