He was sharing points on what a person thinking of opening a cafe should take care of, the challenges and where one can gets help from the government.
At the end of the presentation, there was a question and answer session.
Someone asked him how much capital is required to set up a cafe.
Of course this is a very vague question.
In order to answer his question, the speaker asked where he plans to open the cafe. Is it in the city area or somewhere out of town?
The speaker then gave two extreme examples - one in a shopping mall in central and another in a far flung estate.
After asking the man if he intends to buy new equipment or second hand ones, he did a quick calculation and came up with $400,000 capital to set up for the central location and half of that for the other one.
The speaker also said you need to identify which customer group you want to target.
He said you must know what you want before you find out how to do it.
But did he forget to ask why?
Why the man wants to be in the food and beverage business? Why he wants to open a cafe? Why he wants to target a certain group of customers? Why he wants to buy new equipment?
Without the why, how is he going to survive when the going gets tough.
